ADGPI Full Form


ADGPI stands for Additional Directorate General of Public Information, under the Directorate General of Military Intelligence, relating to Public Relations (PR) activities, media relations and surveillance, information release, publicity, image projection and perception management (PM). Its main objective is to establish such conditions which will instil confidence in our army and prepare it to operate in peacetime and war. An officer of the rank of a Major General heads the Additional Directorate and is assisted by the Deputy Director General. The Directorate is divided into two sections, which deal with "Media Relations" and "Information Operations" respectively.

Duties of ADGPI – Additional Directorate General of Public Information

  • Prepare PR and PM policies of Indian Army.
  • Enhance the image and protect the reputation of the army.
  • Responsible for the conduct of perception management in both peace and war.
  • Inform COAS, VCOAS, DGMI and DGMO on important issues.
  • Act as Media and Perception Management Advisor to COAS.
  • Army Spokesperson on Operational Matters.
  • Hosting and maintaining the Indian Army website (portal).
  • Manage media relations.
  • Implement and issue instructions related to Army PR and PM policy.
  • Monitoring and analysis of print, electronic and cyber media.
  • Issue of press releases, status reports/updates and rebuttals/reactions appearing in the mass media.
  • Interaction with Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Home Affairs for formulation of perception management policy.
  • Interaction with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for implementing perception management campaign and perception management themes.
  • Interaction with GOC-in-C commands.
  • Representing the military in inter-ministerial groups regarding perception management.
