SGT stand for the Sergeant. Sergeant (Sergeant or Sgt) is a rank in many military and police forces. In the military, a sergeant is any of several middle-ranked non-commissioned officers (NCOs) in the army, navy, or air force. The responsibilities of a police sergeant, in addition to the duties of a police officer, include performing administrative staff duties, briefing and training staff with regard to new developments, regulations and techniques, conducting performance appraisals, and enforcing agency policies and regulations.  To be successful as a police sergeant you must be able to perform a wide range of supervisory responsibilities and establish a relationship of trust among the members of your department. An excellent police sergeant should be able to lead by example and command confidence when required.

Police Sergeant Responsibilities:

Sergeants also perform administrative duties similar to a department manager, but may also perform specialized tasks such as:

  • To supervise and guide subordinate employees in the performance of their duties.
  • Assisting with shift briefings, training and performance appraisals. Handling personnel issues and investigating allegations of misconduct.
  • Educating employees about regulatory changes and new police techniques or methods.
  • Prepare reports, maintain logs and ensure maintenance of departmental records.
  • Collaborate with legal and law enforcement stakeholders and testify in court as needed.
  • Performing duties of a police officer and assisting in special projects.
  • Reviewing police documents and inspecting personnel and equipment.
  • Strict adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Participation in community activities and public presentations.

Police Sergeant Requirements:

  • High School Diploma / GED is required.
  • Graduated from a recognized Law Enforcement Academy.
  • 3+ years police experience.
  • Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Data Entry Software.
  • Working knowledge of laws, regulations, police laws, procedures and techniques.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Able to solve complex problems.
  • Excellent management and leadership skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Conflict resolution and decision making skills.
