Router/Switch Buffer size issues
Common locations of packet loss due to output Queue contention in a typical cluster environment. Traffic sent from the cluster nodes toward the WAN converges at switch uplink ports, and coincident bursts sent from cluster nodes can saturate uplink port output queues causing packet loss and very poor TCP performance. Inexpensive top of rack switches often have unacceptably small output queues and inadequate diagnostics (it is sometimes hard to tell from the switch diagnostics whether the switch is dropping packets). Unless the cluster core switch has adequate output Queue space, the cluster nodes can easily cause packet loss when transferring data outside the cluster ( For Example to the WAN). This is true even if each node does not saturate its 1GB link on average, since the bursts coming from each node are 1bps(the speed of the node’s 1GB network transfer).
